Notes from the Superintendent-

It is great to be back to school. I am thrilled to be the new Onalaska School District Superintendent and A LOGGER! As the first day arrived, the smiles on students and parents were wonderful, as I watched drop-offs, deliveries and walks to the classroom. This is my 24th year in education and I never tire of watching the first day take place. It is an honor to borrow your children as we educate them for their future.

I have now been here since the beginning of July and am rapidly becoming acquainted with staff, students and community members. The first thing that jumped out at me is the friendliness and helpfulness everywhere I turn. I have been especially impressed with our students from the early grades to high school. The politeness and greetings have been constant. This tells me we have families and a school who are teaching the young those important life-long skills.

Having been a carpenter in a previous career, I have been examining facilities and grounds. Although I am very impressed with the condition and care of our structures, I see numerous tasks ahead to continue to have a quality school district that this community deserves. During the summer our maintenance crews worked on the inside and outside of buildings to clean and improve them. They were joined by 15 local high school students who were part of the Youth Work Force, funded through stimulus money. These youth helped our maintenance crew to upgrade and restore the district grounds and play areas for appeal and safety.

Also during the summer, we had the kitchen serving breakfasts to about 50 and lunches to about 80 in the Summer Meals Program. The Oasis Program offered summer school to many of the elementary and middle school students. The high school was busy with some credit retrieval classes and a well attended Drivers Ed class. Clearly, a school district is not a quiet place void of children, as it was in yesteryear, where we old-timers wandered about our school peering through the windows at empty classrooms all summer.

I am looking forward to a great year as a LOGGER. We will work hard together to make a difference for our youth.

Sincerely, Scott Fenter, Superintendent
