October is National Principal Appreciation Month, and here in Onalaska, we canโt let it pass without celebrating our incredible elementary principal, Mr. Larry Markuson.
If youโve ever visited our elementary school, chances are youโve seen Mr. Markuson in actionโsmiling in the hallways, greeting students by name, or even sharing a few of his famous dad jokes at assemblies. He has a gift for making everyoneโstudents and staff alikeโfeel seen, heard, and valued.
One of our paraeducators recently captured a moment that perfectly sums up who he is: Mr. Markuson sitting on the swings chatting with one of our students. That image says it allโhe doesnโt just lead from the office; he leads from the heart. Whether heโs getting down on the floor to counsel a student or lending a hand wherever one is needed, his compassion and energy ripple through the entire school.
Mr. Markuson brings with him a deep legacy of education and leadership. As he shared in his own words:
โI grew up in a small town in eastern Montana, and I am from a family of educators. My grandmother was a 1st grade teacher for 30 years, my dad was a teacher, coach, and administrator for 27 years, and I have been a teacher, coach, and administrator for the past 31 years. My wife is also a teacher. We moved to Mossyrock in 2021 and live above Mayfield Lake, where we enjoy all the outdoor activities that living in East Lewis County provides.โ
Mr. Markuson completed both his undergraduate and graduate studies at Montana State University in Bozeman. Over his distinguished career, he has taught Kโ12 Physical Education and Health, as well as secondary mathematics. Heโs also coached a wide range of sportsโbaseball, football, basketball, and track & fieldโand has served as both superintendent and principal across multiple districts.
At the heart of his philosophy is one simple but powerful belief:
โCommunication is of utmost importance. Itโs what allows us to authentically work together to provide the best educational experience for our students.โ
Here in Onalaska, we see that belief in action every single day. From the playground to the classroom, Mr. Markuson models the kind of kindness, integrity, and teamwork that make our school community thrive.
We are so lucky to have him leading our elementary schoolโwith his laughter, dedication, and genuine love for kids lighting the way.
Thank you, Mr. Markuson, for everything you do.
Come meet him tonight at the Fall Family Showcase at 5:30PM
